Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua’s Signature Cleft Lip and Palate Program

unnamed (2) copy.jpg

Since the Rotary year 1994–1995, Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua (RCBND) has been transforming lives by providing cleft lip and palate (CLP) surgeries to children and young adults in Bali and neighboring islands.

To date, more than 2,500 surgeries have been performed, offering affected children not only medical treatment but the opportunity for a normal, healthy, and socially integrated life. The cumulative value of these interventions exceeds IDR 25 billion.

Program Development

In its early years, the program was funded primarily through club resources. Over the past two decades, it has been significantly expanded through Matching Grants and Global Grants from The Rotary Foundation (TRF).

Importantly, during periods between grants, RCBND has consistently ensured continuity of care by bridging funding gaps with its own resources—so that no patient in need would be left untreated.

Current Global Grant – GG 2567615

The current Global Grant, GG 2567615, approved in March 2025, represents a further step in the program’s development:

  • Total funding: approx. USD 218,000

  • Target: 162 surgical interventions

  • Status: ahead of schedule and within budget

  • Projected outcome: potential to exceed target (approx. 200+ interventions) through efficiencies, donations, and favorable exchange rates

  • Expected completion: November 2026

The program is implemented in close cooperation with Yayasan Kolewa Harapan Indonesia, which plays a key role in patient identification, family support, logistics, and follow-up care.

Follow-on Global Grant – GG 2683885

Building on the success and established structures of previous grants, RCBND has prepared and submitted Global Grant GG 2683885, which is currently under review by The Rotary Foundation:

  • Total budget: USD 179,159

  • Scope: 166 surgical interventions

  • Approach: continuation and scaling of the proven CLP model

This follow-on grant ensures a seamless continuation of the program beyond GG 2567615, avoiding interruptions in patient care.

Sustained Impact and Outlook

Over more than three decades, the CLP program has evolved into one of RCBND’s flagship humanitarian initiatives, combining:

  • High-volume surgical care

  • Strong local partnerships

  • Structured patient support systems

  • Measurable long-term impact

With GG 2567615 progressing strongly and GG 2683885 under review, the program is well positioned to continue and expand its impact in the years ahead.
